Constitutive Laws for Complete Components - Windscreen and other Materials - Deliverable Report D325
June 2007, Confidential Document

The previous programmes of impact testing on samples of material and then full size components have generated test data that can be used to evaluate the prediction capability of current and potential material models. The behaviour and prediction capability of the existing material models were therefore studied over a number of impact scenarios with different impact parameters and boundary conditions. Alternate material models and modelling methodologies for representing the laminated glass and fibre reinforced components were also proposed. Their behaviour and prediction capability were studied with reference to the same impact scenarios, impact parameters and boundary conditions.

The improved material models and modelling methodologies will be used for the activities in WP3.3, Test Methods, which will review existing techniques for pedestrian safety and examine how extending the test process to the windscreen may beneficially change head impact outcomes. They will also be applied in WP3.4, Vehicle System Technologies, where changes in construction techniques and processes will include reviewing how the bonnet and the windscreen and its surrounding metal structure can be made safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
