About SP2: heavy vehicles
This part of the Integrated Project aims to reduce the number of both fatal and serious injuries in Europe from crashes where heavy vehicles are involved. The focus is on protection of pedestrians and cyclists (so-called "vulnerable road users") in accidents with trucks and the protection of occupants of cars impacting at the side.

Specific research objectives are:

  • Development of strategies for enhanced pedestrian and cyclist friendly truck design (including front and side structures).
  • Development of strategies for enhanced truck and trailer design including all-side under-run prevention systems for new truck trailer concept.
  • Recommendations for improvements and harmonization of truck regulations.
  • The sub project organisation reflects the two main areas of interest: accidents involving vulnerable road users and cars, respectively.

The partners include 2 OEM's, 1 supplier, 5 research institutes and 3 universities. The Sub Project is headed by Juergen Gugler from the Technical University of Graz in Austria.
